Almost four decades after the Chornobyl accident, the long-lived radionuclides released to the environment contribute significantly to the contamination pattern in Ukraine. The lecture examines the development of the situation in radioactively contaminated areas in the post-accident period. A number of radioecological research activities related to study of radionuclide distribution, speciation and migration pathways in various ecosystems have been conducted in the Chornobyl exclusion zone. The obtained results of these studies are presented and analyzed. Prospective for the use and revitalization of radioactively contaminated territories are discussed. The information about recent occupation of the Chornobyl zone and its consequences is presented.
